US Department of Transportation plans for technology

Traffic Technology Today looks at the released technology blueprint for federal government:
According to RITA, a key part of the research will examine how to effectively deliver warnings to drivers to enhance overall safety, prevent collisions, and minimize driver distraction. IntelliDrive safety applications would enable vehicles to have 360° awareness to inform a vehicle operator of hazards and situations they are unable to see. The applications have the potential to reduce crashes through advisories and warnings. For instance, vehicle operators may be advised of a schoolzone, sharp ramp curve, or slippery patch of road ahead and may be warned in more imminent crash situations, such as during merging operations or if the vehicle ahead stops suddenly.
This is a recent release and a plan for 2010-2014. This is a signal to local transit planners and technology vendors, you have the go ahead, and you have five years to prove Mish wrong and Caplan right.
