A horrid delusion

E.J. Dionne writes,
Many conservatives in the pre-Civil War period opposed the abolition of slavery; many conservatives in the 1930s opposed Social Security; many conservatives in the 1960s opposed civil rights laws.

Kling picked this up.

The justification for slavery was the white man's burden, a central plank in the Democrat liberal platform, remaining unchanged since antebellum days.  The conservative position, always, was they do not like to mix race and government, under any conditions.  Conservatives just think official racism is a pain in the ass, no moral argument, strictly utilitarian.
