And a bit of the babe, I always thought. Lousy at math, still doing the "people of color" thing. She rose up the ranks, started as Jerry Brown's secretary, took a few typing classes, got promoted to affirmative action senator. Same as Boxer. I think she serves tea back in the swamp, it was never made clear what the job actually was.
