Why are electronic election systems networked?

SOME STATES REVIEW ELECTION SYSTEMS FOR SIGNS OF INTRUSION

I do not get the hassle. It is simple, folks walk in and vote electronically, and when the day is done the officials take the chip or disc to the central office. No networking is needed, networking exists only because some dufas election official, it has absolutely no function in elections except for hacking.  I can think of no other value a network gives to voters showing up and hitting a button.
