As I see it, the problem is with the young software engineers and managers. All they know is the web, and the money it made. But the web pages, in all their glory, require not much more than a clever kid out of high school, and the spots to make money are few and defined by the marketing space. But these kids saw the web develop and know nothing more, they think all money comes from the web. But, the venture capital industry has been earning something like 2-3% ROI for several years, the young kids being deluded into kicking the rubble for gold when all the gold has been taken.
What will happen in the venture capital community, and the venture capitalists know this, is that ROI comes from applying the technology to places other than the web. Neither the young web kids nor the venture capitalists know how to do that, but the venture investors know enough to scatter shot the money around and find the new opportunity. The young kids haven't learned that yet.
