The disaster on the natives here was mainly unintentional spread of disease. Otherwise most of what we all know as core California was this set of 21 missions, put up by Franciscans. That is California history, founding and culture. There is no war of conquest, really. No civil war. The original idea was to make natives industrial and have religious delusions. That is a far cry from the original Spanish conquest of Mexico, and happened a hundred years later, entirely from Spain with little Mexican engagement. That is Jerry Brown's California, we spend time in one of the string of great universities he Franciscans left behind. Some parts of the original adobe architecture remains.
It is the Beach Boys, Hollywood. All the towns, roads along the coast having Spanish names.
So, in the squabble between the Swamp and La Raza, we find the original California and it needs to be left alone.
