NXP and their little stunt

"During each of the car’s 10,000km (6,200 miles) journeys a compact telematics box, based on NXP technology, will send test eCalls to IBM servers, as well as Allianz and BMW call centers, at regular intervals, proving that the system works across borders, no matter which e-Call standard is being used. The eCall will be sent to a public safety answering point (PASP), along with important information referred to as the MSD (minimum set of data), containing details of the exact time of the call, GPS coordinates and vehicle identification number (VIN). The VIN can be decoded and will provide information about the brand of the car, the color and additional details."
From Traffic Technology.

OK, cute trick, duct tape a smart phone to the dashboard. Try something interesting. Like use the texting system to distribute anonymous traffic locations to all cars! That would be something. Another trick, let the drivers smart device plug in, then display a simple, but safely enhancing visual aid of known traffic.

And finally one last thing they might do to enhance their trick. Define a subset of the Wave messaging suite between the black box and the users smart device, then allow third party applications!
