The Fundamental Difference between Fairs and MarketsMises Daily

Quoting this author:
Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Baron de Laune (1727–1781), often referred to as Turgot, was a French economist and statesman. Read Murray Rothbard's biography of Turgot. See also The Turgot Collection: Writings, Speeches, and Letters of Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Baron de Laune.

The original tract described the formation of markets and fairs, distinguishing between informal, but regular open air markets and community sponsored fairs.

Back to fundamentals, whot drove the selection of market places among cities? Easily understood as a problem in minimizing transportation costs by selecting one of several cities at the local market.

There are many good reasons to have seasonal fairs and weekly markets, both serve necessary frequency/product sequence to construct a smoother economy. The practice continues today with our conventions and free trade zones.
