Top law enforcement and national security officials in the U.S., U.K. and Australia will warn Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg that stronger privacy enhancements across the social network’s messaging services would dramatically hamper efforts to investigate and prevent crimes against children. While just the other day the FBI issued a warning about data ransom and requested public agencies go through the extra step of protecting data. The confusion still reigns. Big tech is in a pickle because little tech can deploy the technology in small open sources pieces. Companies like Telegraph have already thumbed up to government. Dunno yet what the next steps are.
“Companies should not deliberately design their systems to preclude any form of access to content, even for preventing or investigating the most serious crimes,” Attorney General William Barr, acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan, U.K. Home Secretary Priti Patel and Australian Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton wrote to Zuckerberg in a letter set to be released Thursday evening but obtained earlier by POLITICO.
