First, I loved the cable pull technology that won the bid. Cable pull puts the motor inertia on the ground, so it is inertially stable. But, somehow the project got funding delayed and likely is a year behind schedule. They might recover a year from now, but Bus Rapid Transit technology is likely to advance faster.
If I am a Bart director, my best bet is to buy in to the right away over the surface streets, and bet on technology making that right of way efficient for moving people. Do a deal. Bart and the Oakland transit grab two lanes along the route. Guarantee BART at least a 50 MPH right of way priority along the route. It puts everything on the fast track, technology companies know what to do and solutions are a year away. E Traffic, digital lane assist for BRT, signal light management, automated safety. Hey, run some cable pull, why not, keep it in the two dedicated lanes.
