I love the idea. Consider evolution from the ecosystem of mitochondria in the body, evolving so as to maintain the host from penetration. The mitochondria carrying the original 'soup' of the evolutionary point at which they invaded the host. Everything they do in the body is about homeostasis, a fairly delicate complexity of hormones and activators.
One of the evolutionary goals was to limit asexual reproduction in the host. The production of gametes is the only permissible asexual form and must be triggered via external stimulant, thus protecting the host from runaway cell division. Sexual reproduction is inherited from asexual, it is the only permitted form of asexual reproduction in us life forms.
