Made famous by the founder, each store had a greeter for new customers. Dollar Tree has a similar concept, each new customer got a 'Welcome to Dollar Tree". Why?
First, make shoplifters nervous and guilty.
Second, they are the checkout counter managers. In both cases, the check out manager function is a counting procedure. Dollar Tree employees all know the congestion states, it is announced. They have the function built in. They also let their queues get a bit more rowdy before calling for backup.
