The “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance has demanded that tech companies insert “backdoors” in encrypted apps to allow law enforcement agencies the access they say they need to police online criminality.
The top justice officials of Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States said in a statement released on Sunday that the growth of end-to-end encrypted apps that make official oversight impossible – like Signal, Telegram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp – “pose significant challenges to public safety”.
Poses a problem for sandbox. The proper approach is to accept cash and text limits. Make it difficult t use cash for nefarious means over some small limit. The limits are renewable and thus reviewable.
But this illustrates something. The technology for secure personal ID is available today, the problem is educating law enforcement about a better plan for new technology money. The New Fed and NSA are on opposite sides now, but there is a middle ground that both accept. The proper smart card design can accept the middle ground.
This should not be a problem, rollout can accommodate the cops. No one is going to carry millions in bearer cash on their smart cards, we can keep those large amounts on the ledger or the pits or on account with a correspondent bank. Even a fifty dollar limit keeps the tech industry busy for five year re-invorgating the web.
