I solved my Using problem

I always needed direct name space like:
xchars PutStr str;

But, I forgot to implement that, and just did. It was two lines of code in the search loop. So I am not doing the XXX thing, good. Lot of stuff to track, and I am on track when minor changes, on average, involve a few lines of code, and keep the line count stable. Each tiny move connects a whole bunch more stuff,the foundation is set.
(I keep watching my cursor closely, I don't think X is all that good at tracking, I sometimes click, and get the mark just to one side of the cursor.  And it frequently gets lost on scroll bars.)
