They can be connected in io manager, or version of. When keys are coming in, io manager will know, mouse isn't active, they can be connected much more intimately in io manager than x windows.
An editor package can keep the cursor slowed and stable when the user is typing away, or IO manager can change samples rates, in favor of the active device. I am ding little of this, but work this stuff out before and see that it all fits quite nicely, and these snippets are an easy debug and version control.
My line editor, my mouse tracker, all the functions driven down to a few lines of trivial code in the main watch loop, bare minimum, enough to be a stable Linux Power Console in the lab and ready for expansion by others..
