Part1:
Oakland Unified Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell, in white hard hat, visits the district's new central kitchen construction site. The project is $18 million over budget and will require the district to make cuts in other planned projects to complete it.
Already reeling from looming layoffs to close its budget deficit, the Oakland Unified school board decided to halt some construction projects underway because the district can’t afford to complete them. In a 4-3 vote Wednesday, the board agreed to abruptly stop construction planning on nine projects and divert about $74.5 million from those projects to 40 others already underway. In addition, the board agreed to dip into other capital funds to help pay for those projects. These projects were funded through the district’s $475 million Measure J school facilities improvement bond approved by city voters in 2012. Halted projects include school classrooms, labs, kitchens, playgrounds, security cameras and the construction of a $43 million district administration building.
Part 2:
How did we end up here? We have too many schools and too few kids.
Dozens of district schools are under-enrolled, and the number of charter and district-run schools in our school district is much higher than the state average. In our district-run schools, there are nearly 11,000 empty seats. The cost of maintaining buildings, utilities and staff is not sustainable.
Our schools do so much more than just educate children — the Oakland school district provides multiple meals per day to thousands of students, health services, after-school programming, enrichment, restorative justice and more — all free of charge.
Part one is the old keynesians fake;low rates and school construction corruption. All the California districts did the swindle.
Part two is carpet bombing rice farmers and blaming it on lack of nurses.
Part three is a little different in that last cycle. All parties knew it was corruption, agreed to barbecue their children. So at some point we have to let evolution takes its course. If Cal liberals want to barbecue their children, then lets order some barbecue sauce and get it done.
