History of ascii

Developed in the 1830s and 1840s by Samuel Morse.



Here is the original DEC13 keyboard from Digital Equipment.  Samuel Morse worked for DEC, they made mechanical adding machines.

The morse code procedures included control characters, new line, stop, break, and so on.

Then the Europeans had something called Baudot, and they connected it to a typewriter using magnetic coils.  Here we have the DEC71 keyboard, using baudot.

And, like today, you were not allowed to cuss when using it.
