History of China
A cycle of consolidation followed by collapse back to individual states. A repeated pattern of about 300-500 years, very roughly.
Hong Kong and Taiwan are part of that. The consolidators reach a debt expansion limit, an Avogadro number natural to Chinese culture, maybe a result of their written language system.. (a speculation).
But the cycle exists, and we are seeing a shortened version of that cycle. The break away of provinces on the periphery is a serious problem for a state too large.
